Manager Gary Waddock expressed satisfaction after witnessing his side perform well against a strong Fulham team that included a wealth of experience including Moritz Voltz, Liam Rosenior, Ian Pearce, Papa Boupa Diop and former Barcelona defender Phillippe Christanval.

Cottagers boss Laurie Sanchez was present in the Directors Box casting his eye over before Sunday's opening Premiership encounter at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal.

Indeed the home side were unfortunate not to record a victory against the west London Premiership side with keeper Nikki Bull having little to do after the break in a match where the conditions, not for the first time during the pre season campaign, caused difficulty with the driving rain making playing conditions difficult.

Talking to The Shots after the match boss Waddock said, "I am extremely pleased considering the opposition that we were playing. They had players that are worth millions of pounds but we put in a performance that in spells we were the better team.

"However it counts for nothing and I have told my players that we have to start doing that for the next ten months or so. Their keeper paid off two or three really good saves after the break and we will need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal".

Starting with five of his new signings the boss was happy with the way his side settled.

Indeed midfielder Ben Harding nearly opened the scoring within a minute with a 16 yard shot on the left hand side that was just too close to keeper Ricardo Batista.

Fulham did test Bull when Rosenior's 20 yard snap shot was well handled by the diving Bull. Pearce also tested the home keeper from distance on the quarter hour but his rising shot was off target.

With a good rhythym in their play the home side looked fit and alert and good approach play from Louie Soares and Dean Smith on the right set up Harding who had made a timely run inside the penalty box. His first time effort was just over the bar.

Shots did take the lead on 27 minutes when a corner was punched clear by Batista but only into the path of Lewis Chalmers whose perfect 20 yard drive gave the Portuguese keeper no chance as it entered the top right hand corner of the net.

It was a goal that caught the attention of the Shots boss who said afterwards, "It was a lovely strike and we need to do that more often. We have players in the side who are technically very good and we have to take the opportunity to when it crops up to pull the trigger and hit the back of the net more often."

The lead only lasted three minutes though.

Keeper Bull protested that he did not touch striker Ismael Ehui as he went down inside the penalty box but referee Steve Creighton pointed to the spot but took no further action.

Wayne Brown converted the spot kick.

Undeterred Aldershot continued to provide the more telling football and just before the break Rob Elvins dragged a close range shot just wide of the target after a teasing byeline centre from Soares.

With the rain bucketing down at the Rec the second half drifted a touch in the early stages especially with the influx of substitutions being made.

Harding went close again whilst the introduction of Kirk Hudson certainly caused the visitors problems. The former Celtic youngster produced a fierce strike on 71 minutes after being set up intelligently by Scott Davies. Batista instinctively saved with a finger tip which cannoned onto the bar and over.

Hudson also forced a fine save from the visiting keeper late on as his effort was forced behind from close range.

Victory would have been deserved but boss Waddock confirmed that he is more than happy with the pre season campaign despite the set backs along the way.

He concluded, "I have been pleased with the work the players have been putting in on the training ground and it shows in the games. They can get around the park and put teams under pressure. We have a lot of pace in the side also so that when we do regain possession we can break quickly. The fitness levels have been good but we need to maintain that.

"It has been a mixed bag in the pre season because we have lost players through injury, games being called off because of the weather or being re-scheduled.

"That is part of being a manager at a football club and you have to overcome these problems. There has been a lot of positives too and the performances that the players have put in have been good.

"However it all starts properly on Saturday and we need to start picking up points because that is when the real business begins".
